ONION SERIES BY BETSY MULDERIG, Art Exhibit at the L.F. Wade International Airport

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Masterworks in tandem with the Department of Airport Operations, will hang the Betsy Mulderig Onions Series in the Charles Lloyd Tucker Gallery situated in the US Departures Lounge at the airport. This whimsical take on Bermuda’s history seems a fitting installation for the 400 anniversary of settlement of our island. The exhibit will be in place for 12 months and will be enjoyed by all departing passengers travelling to the USA.
Towards the end of 2009 Masterworks will install works by reknowned Bermudian artist Charles Lloyd Tucker and his students.
A “by invitation only” opening will take place on Thursday 22 January.

Information on the Artist, Elisabeth Mulderig:
In 1997 Bermudian artist Elisabeth Mulderig produced a series of fifteen oil paintings on linen portraying the Bermuda “Onion”-the quintessential symbol of the Bermudian. The subjects span four hundred years, from Juan de Bermudez, the Spanish sea captain who is attributed with “discovering” Bermuda, to Gina Swainson, the Bermudian who was crowned Miss Universe in 1979. Woven into the series are depictions of Bermudian traditions such as Cup Match, roof wetting and the Moongate.
The ubiquitous “Onion head” is the common thread of this series, which is emblematic of the unity of the Island’s people, traditions and heritage. Originally Bermuda’s best-known export produce, the onion, became the local moniker for a born Bermudian. Elisabeth Mulderig’s straightforward humorous story-telling through the visual arts enables the visitor and the Bermudian alike to better understand the cultural heritage of Bermuda.
