- 6th Biennial Conference of the Society of Early Americanists
- SEA chose Bermuda for its 6th Biennial Conference in order to mark the first settlement of Bermuda, which, of course, is the second oldest permanent English-speaking community in the Western Hemisphere. There will be presentations of scholarly papers on all aspects of literature, history and culture of the Americas (mostly, but not exlcusively, English-speaking regions) from earliest contact up until the early part of the 19th century. About 300 scholars are expected to attend this conference - March 4 -7
A review of the programme http://www.societyofearlyamericanists.org/conference/2009/SEA6thBiennial2009_Program_(021209).pdf will indicate a number of sessions (especially #20, #32, #69 and #72) and individual papers directly relating to the early history of Bermuda, not to mention many other papers pertaining to related areas. These could be of considerable interest to teachers and members of the public concerned with promoting greater understanding of Bermuda's early history and her relationships with North America and the Caribbean generally.
The cost to local residents is $25 for the entire conference and gives full access to all panels, receptions, and events. Also, note that all high school teachers are entitled to free registration.
