AN EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS BY ALFRED BIRDSEY at ACE GALLERY
As one of Bermuda’s most celebrated artists, Alfred Birdsey stood alone for most of the second half of the 20th century as the only modernist painter working in Bermuda. Entirely self-taught, it is believed he started painting in 1927 at the age of 16. Although influenced by Oriental art his characteristic loose brushwork and paired down imagery was entirely his own. This exhibition of paintings is selected from the extensive collection of E. Michael Jones, one of Birdsey’s major collectors. The 36 paintings, all from the 1970s and 80s, span a period when Birdsey was a complete master of his medium and created his most accomplished works. Exhibit Feb. 5th - 31 December 2009

The Youth Debate is the second of seven events being planned by the Bermuda 2009 YOUTH FORCE.Several primary school students have been preparing for the Youth in Debate plank for months. They are working with Dynamic Debaters and Learners and have confirmed the topic, “This house believes that the sailors who experienced Bermuda before 1609 were in the wrong profession. “ The students have used the book Miracle as their source. They have investigated the stories surrounding sailors who came to Bermuda before 1609 and how they reacted to our island. It is said that many visitors (sailors) were terrified of Bermuda as they heard it was inhabited by witches and devils. It is said that many grown men ran from birds and vowed never to return. Through this topic, the students have become more familiar with the debate format and plan to awe their audiences as they take to the stage on Thursday, April 16 at 6.00 p.m. and Friday, April 17 at 9:30 a.m. at Prospect Primary School. All are welcome. The students will receive certificates and the winners will receive gift certificates and trophies. Cup Match
The 2-day Cricket match is a favourite Bermuda event, which is steeped in tradition and history reaching back to 1902 and originally organised by the Somerset and St. George’s lodges as their annual picnic to coincide with 1st August, Emancipation Day. As the event grew in popularity, it was transferred to the respective sporting clubs and became the centrepiece of the dual holiday we call Cup Match, which is always held on the Thursday and Friday closest to 1st August. This year it will be held on Thursday July 30th and Friday July 31st at the St.George's Cricket Club. You will find delectable food, pulsating music, eyeboggling, fashions and good-natured revelry. Combine with copious amounts of liquid refreshment, plenty of nail-biting, tension and cheering masses of partisanspectators. Add liberal sprinklings of Bermudian hospitality and a dash of Crown and Anchor (optional). Bring this exotic mixture to a slow boil under a scorching mid-summer sun. That’s Cup Match. Two teams -Somerset and St. George’s - vie for the spoils in a game some describe as a gentleman’s sport. Today, with its carnival atmosphere and twenty-two of Bermuda’s best cricketers on show, the perennial rivalry between Somerset and St. George’s cricket clubs has grown into an event not to be missed by residents and visitors alike. Visit the following website of the Department of Tourism for a fuller account of Cup Match - http://www.bermudatourism.com/pdf/2006CupMatchBrochure.pdf

FAITH VENTURE 2009
‘Faith Venture, 2009’ is the banner for a series of events held during the week of 27th September to 4th October sponsored by the Anglican Church of Bermuda. It will culminate in an open air service on the exact 400th Anniversary of the first communion held here in 1609 – at which the Archbishop of York the Rev. Dr. John Sentamu will be the guest speaker. Whilst celebrating 400 years of Christian presence in Bermuda, the underling theme of Faith Venture is reconciliation. A variety of events are planned for the week including a two man play on the life of John Newton, a Mosaic written by Bermudian Ruth Thomas on the oral history of the Anglican Church and a giant parish fair held at the Arboretum to which the whole Island is invited. Faith Venture will be launched on 31st May in the Town Square, St. George’s when a gift to Bermuda will be unveiled.

Signature Event: Annual Gombey Festival
Sponsored by the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, Gombey Festival 2009 will be held on Sunday 4 October, 2009 at the City Hall Car Park. This event is held annually and provides the opportunity to celebrate the folk dances and practices of our Bermuda Gombeys. There are approximately six Gombey Troupes and this celebration provides the opportunity to showcase the dance style of each troupe. During this celebration a Master of this local Folk art will be chosen to be honored. This year the honoree will be Mr. John “Pickles” Spence who thirty years ago, was the leader of the popular Carnival Gombey Troupe. This group broke with tradition and produced a troupe of dancers who used the traditional Gombey music but whose dancers wore costumes which had a unique carnival glitz. To compliment this year’s Gombey Festival Programme, a special invitation has been issued to the Emerald Shamioles Masquerade Dancers of Montserrat. The music of this group is similar to our Gombey Music but their costumes break with tradition. As our guests, these folk dancers will showcase the importance of the passing on of traditions. In the case of this group, it will be evident that the traditions of Gombey music are passed on even though the costumes vary.

Mark Twain in Bermuda, by Corporation of Hamilton
Proclaiming that “the rumors of my death are greatly exaggerated”, Mark Twain returns to his beloved Bermuda in November to celebrate the 400th Anniversary. Straight from the Planters Barn Theater on the banks of the Mississippi River, veteran actor Richard Garey brings the excitement of the famous Twain show to Bermuda’s City Hall Theatre. Combining hilarious comedy, biting satire, and amazing insights, Mark Twain in Bermuda is simply great theatre. This show skillfully mixes Twain’s wit and wisdom into a very entertaining package. Authentic in every detail, the show includes some of Mark Twain’s writings that have not been performed since Sam Clemens performed in Bermuda over 100 years ago. You laugh; you cry; you experience Mark Twain himself. Don’t miss this exciting show! City Hall Theatre shows of Mark Twain in Bermuda will run daily from November 8 to 10 with a matinee on Sunday, November 8 at 2:30 pm and a 7:00 pm evening show from Sunday through Tuesday. This show brings back the famous shows that Mr. Twain performed all over the world. He was just as celebrated for his shows as for his books. Audiences can again experience the exciting live Mark Twain performance. Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, loved Bermuda. He is author of The Innocents Abroad, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Roughing It, and many more literary classics. He visited Bermuda a total of eight times and said, “When people are on their way to heaven and stop off in Bermuda, it is so beautiful they think they are already there.”
