About Bermuda 2009

Why is this celebration important?
From the wreck of the ship, Sea Venture, in 1609 and inspite of all odds, geographic, historic, social and economic, over the past four centuries, Bermuda has evolved into a diverse multi-ethnic and multi-cultural community. This anniversary gives the opportunity to honour and showcase the Bermuda people, the culture, and the events that have helped to build Bermuda over the past 400 years and make it what it is today. We can acknowledge and celebrate the journey.

Have there been Bermuda commemorations before?
The earliest recorded celebration was the 300th in 1909 and it is marked by the obelisk in Somers Gardens.  Following that many Bermudians remember the momentous 350th Anniversary in 1959. That celebration included actor, Charlton Heston, performing in Macbeth.  In 2005 Bermuda celebrated the Quincentennial discovery of Bermuda by Juan de Bermudez.  In 1984 there were many in Bermuda who celebrated the 375th Anniversary.  This 400th Anniversary in 2009 promises to be the best celebration ever.
