Cathedral of the Most
Holy Trinity
The City of Hamilton was founded in 1790 and became Bermuda’s capital city in 1815. Its extensive Front Street with upper-level verandahs facing the harbour give this cosmopolitan city a welcoming “home-town” feel. The imposing Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity (1886), a brilliant Gothic Revival essay in stone, still dominates the City owing to rigid controls on height and view sheds. Other notable buildings include the Sessions House, an 1820s structure with a fine Italianate tower and arcade from the 1880s, the Cabinet Office (1833), a pleasing neo-Classical pavilion set in a manicured lawn, and City Hall (1957) designed by Bermuda’s foremost vernacular revivalist, Wil Onions.
